Céline Hartmann was fifty-one, two weeks from a promotion, when she sat in her car outside the office and could not make herself go in. She went to the flower market instead. She has gone almost every morning since.
The studio is a former bakery in Carroll Gardens. She still sketches every arrangement on tracing paper first, in pencil, the way she used to plan a staircase. “Structure is the only thing I brought with me,” she says. “It turned out to be the whole job.”
We talk about the year she earned less than her intern, the client who cried at a funeral spray, and why she keeps her old drafting table in the corner, facing the window.

Practical, funny and very candid about what a second act actually costs, who it scares, and why almost nobody regrets it.

One
For nineteen years I edited other people’s stories. I was good at it. I could find the real sentence buried in paragraph six and move it to the top, and I could tell a writer, kindly, that the thing she loved most had to go.
I could not do it for myself. At forty-four I had a corner office, a title with three words in it, and a drafts folder full of emails that began, I think I want to try something else. I kept telling myself I had left it too late. Late is a story we tell ourselves, and I told it beautifully, every night, for six years.
This book is forty conversations with women who stopped telling it. Some of them are braver than me than I was. All of them were scared. Not one of them wishes she had waited longer.

Dear you,
This week I want to talk about the drafts folder, and everything we leave in it. Mine has an email from 2019 that starts “I think I want to try something else.” I finally sent it. Write back and tell me what is in yours.
love, Margo
